The graphic arts; modern men and modern methods
A printed version of Joseph Pennell's Scammon lectures on etching, lithography and pen drawing, issued in 1921 by the University of Chicago Press for the Art Institute of Chicago and addressed to art students and printmakers. The plates reproduce work by nineteenth-century illustrators and etchers — Whistler's loose chalk and drypoint figures, Rossetti's dense crosshatched pen scene, crowd groups in coarse halftone — useful for high-contrast line textures, silhouetted figures and examples of how tone breaks down in reproduction.
