Light and the behavior of organisms
A research monograph on phototropism by the zoologist Samuel Ottmar Mast, published in New York by J. Wiley & Sons in 1911 for physiologists and experimental biologists studying how light steers animal and plant movement. The plates are pen-and-ink track diagrams: wavering paths of organisms plotted between ruled baselines, rows of small arrows marking the direction of incident light, and looping routes annotated with clock times and letter keys, usable as ready-made abstract line and arrow motifs.
