The history of fashion in France, or, The dress of women from the Gallo-Roman period to the present time
A costume history by Augustin Challamel, translated from the French by Frances Cashel Hoey and John Lillie and published by Scribner and Welford in New York in 1882, tracing women's dress in France from the Gallo-Roman era to the nineteenth century for general and antiquarian readers. Hand-coloured lithographic plates group three or four standing figures against blank ground, each shown full-length in headdress and gown, giving designers isolated silhouettes, period sleeve and skirt shapes, and flat washes of rose, violet and gold.
