Cosmos : a sketch of a physical description of the universe
Alexander von Humboldt's Cosmos in the Harper edition of 1869, a New York reprint of his survey of astronomy, physical geography and the history of science for general nineteenth-century readers. The single indexed image is a line-engraved armorial shield with an open book and two small charges, its tinctures rendered in stipple and hatching usable as heraldic or bookplate ornament.
