Old Touraine; the life and history of the famous chateâux of France

Cook, Theodore Andrea, Sir, 1867-1928 · 1900 · New York, J. Pott · 14 pictures

A two-volume history and travel account of the châteaux and towns of the Touraine region, written by the English journalist Theodore Andrea Cook and issued in New York by James Pott in 1900 for English-reading tourists and antiquarians. The plates are halftone photographs of French Renaissance and medieval buildings shot in full elevation — conical-roofed round towers, dormered slate roofs, arcaded courtyards, churches with squat spires — usable as architectural silhouettes, roofline patterns, and grainy grey backdrops.
