Inside Out Library

A book of memories of great men and women of the age, from personal acquaintance

Hall, S. C. (Samuel Carter), 1800-1889, St. John, Cynthia Morgan, 1852-1919. fmo, Wordsworth Collection · 1877 · London, Virtue · 131 pictures

A volume of reminiscences of British and American writers and artists, compiled by the editor Samuel Carter Hall from his own acquaintance with them and published by Virtue in London in 1877 for a general literary readership. The wood engravings show the houses where those figures lived, drawn with heavy foliage, ivy-covered walls, garden gates and small figures on the path, alongside portrait heads and facsimile signatures; useful for hatched tree masses, domestic architecture and arch-topped vignette framing.
