Garrett P. Serviss's popular astronomy book, published by Harper & Brothers in New York and London in 1909 for general readers curious about nebulae, star clouds and dark lanes. The plates are halftone reproductions of long-exposure observatory photographs: white star fields on dense black grounds, the Andromeda spiral, ring nebulae, and streaked filaments, useful as high-contrast speckled textures and grain.
