Dame heraldry
Dame Heraldry, published by D. Lothrop and Company in Boston in 1886 under the initials F. S. W., teaches the elements of coat armour to young readers. The 83 cuts are small black-and-white escutcheons whose tinctures are shown by engraved hatching and dots — lions, martlets, fleurs-de-lis, billets, bends and ermine borders — usable as compact badge shapes and ready-made texture fills.
