A survey of European book decoration from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, compiled by Martin Gerlach and published in Vienna and Leipzig in 1915 for printers, binders and designers. Its plates reproduce woodcut and engraved initials, borders, printers' marks and binding stamps in flat black line — interlaced beasts, acanthus, dotted grounds and figure scenes set inside letters.
