A German technical treatise on the microscope — its theory, use, history and current state — by the Dutch naturalist Pieter Harting, translated by Friedrich Wilhelm Theile and issued in Braunschweig in 1866 for microscopists and physicians. The 290 wood-engraved figures show lettered optical diagrams, ray paths through prisms and lenses, stages, mirrors and mechanical stands, drawn in fine outline with ruled hatching.
