De Stijl Vol 1 No 1 Delft October 1917

Theo van Doesburg · 1917 · 2 pictures

The first issue of De Stijl, the Dutch avant-garde monthly edited by Theo van Doesburg and published in Delft in October 1917 for artists, architects and critics aligned with Neo-Plasticism. Plates reduce painting and building to black bars and rectangles on cream paper, plus a long strip of repeated window bays from a housing facade, giving designers rhythmic grid compositions, modular facade patterns and hard-edged geometric marks.
