Maier, Michael, 1568?-1622 · 1616 · Oppenheimii : Typis Hieronymi Galleri : Sumptibus Lucae Jennis · 12 pictures

A Latin alchemical treatise on gold as medicine, written by the physician Michael Maier and printed at Oppenheim in 1616 by Hieronymus Galler for the publisher Lucas Jennis, addressed to learned doctors and students of spagyric chemistry. The pictures here are printers' ornaments rather than plates: woodcut initials filled with acanthus, dolphins and grotesque heads, a triangular tailpiece built from strapwork and a bearded mask, and an armorial shield flanked by leaf scrolls, useful as drop caps, page-end stops and frame parts.
