The decorative arts ecclesiastical and civil of the Middle Ages
Henry Shaw's survey of medieval ecclesiastical and civil ornament, published by William Pickering in London in 1851 for antiquaries, architects and designers working in the Gothic revival. The plates copy illuminated initials, borders and applied ornament as wood-engraved line work: white interlaced strapwork on hatched grounds, foliate scrolls in medallions, and beast-headed terminals usable as drop caps and rule motifs.
