Dutch devotional emblem book, Jan Suderman's rendering of Herman Hugo's Pia Desideria with imagery after Otto van Veen, printed at Utrecht by Hermanus and Johannes Besseling in 1749 for Protestant lay readers' meditation. Engraved plates, several signed J. Smit, pair a winged haloed Divine Love with the child-soul in open landscapes under rayed suns, lightning and banked clouds, with dense hatching and hard outlines.
