De la Comédie Française aux boulevards. Préf. de Jules Claretie
A 1906 Paris album of theatrical caricatures by Ch. Grandval, prefaced by Jules Claretie, portraying actors and personalities of the Comédie-Française and the boulevard stages for French theatregoers and readers of the day. The plates are half-length profile portraits drawn in a few thick brush strokes with flat washes of grey, pink and black, exaggerating jaw, nose and hat, and offer designers a compact vocabulary of gestural line, silhouetted top hats and bowlers, and limited two-colour tinting.
