De l'art des devises
Pierre Le Moyne's treatise on the making of devices, engraved by Jean Le Pautre and printed in Paris by Sébastien Cramoisy in 1666 for court readers and heraldic compilers. The 147 plates are circular emblems with Latin mottoes on banded rims, filled with rayed suns, eclipses, clouds and low horizons, framed by palm fronds, wheat ears, ribbons and small crowned shields.
