Pierre Le Moyne's treatise on the composing of devices, printed in Paris by Sébastien Cramoisy and Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy in 1666 for courtiers, heralds and learned readers. Engraved roundels hold suns, clouds, mountains and stars behind Latin mottoes, framed by palm fronds, laurel, wheat sheaves, scrolling ribbons and small crowned shields — ready-made emblem frames, radiating-line textures and motto banners.
