De l'art des devises
Pierre Le Moyne's 1666 treatise on the composition of devices and mottoes, printed in Paris by Sébastien Cramoisy for court readers and heraldic amateurs. Its 150 engravings are circular emblem plates: suns, clouds, eclipses and landscapes ringed by Latin mottoes, framed in palm fronds, laurel wreaths, wheat sheaves, ribbon scrolls and crowned coats of arms.
