An Italian scientific memoir by the Paduan astronomer Giuseppe Toaldo, printed in Venice in 1776, arguing for lightning rods on the campanile of San Marco and on ships, powder magazines and other buildings, addressed to natural philosophers and civic authorities. The engravings are rococo-framed headpieces and initials heaped with instruments — globes, dividers, quadrants, telescopes, scrolls and books — usable as ornament, borders or instrument silhouettes.
