Jacobus de Cessolis's Latin moralization of chess, in which the pieces stand for social estates, printed here in a Catalan version issued by L'Avenç in Barcelona in 1900 with José Brunet y Bellet, reproducing the woodcuts of an early printed edition. The blocks are coarse relief cuts: single standing tradesmen in long gowns and caps holding their tools — a bowl and knife, a shield and dice — plus two seated men disputing over an open book under an arcade, all built from thick outlines and parallel hatching that reproduce cleanly at any size.
