Della novissima iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia in the 1624 Padua edition from Pietro Paolo Tozzi, expanded by Giovanni Zaratino Castellini, a reference handbook of allegorical figures for painters, poets and emblem makers. Woodcuts show single standing personifications with identifying attributes—flaming urns, animals, mirrors, sails—framed in ruled boxes beside vertical candelabra ornament strips useful as borders, dividers and figure stock.
