Della novissima iconologia

Ripa, Cesare, 1560-1645, Castellini, Giovanni Zaratino, 1570-1641 · 1625 · Padova, P. P. Tozzi · 355 pictures

Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, expanded by Giovanni Zaratino Castellini and printed by Pietro Paolo Tozzi at Padua in 1625, is a reference dictionary of personified abstractions compiled for painters, sculptors, poets and makers of devices. The 359 woodcuts show single standing or striding female figures in loose drapery, each carrying identifying attributes — a temple facade, a dove, a flowering branch, a heart on a platter — framed by ruled borders and flanked by candelabra-and-mask ornament strips usable as rules and column fillers.
