Della piu che novissima iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, expanded by Giovanni Zaratino Castellini and printed at Padua by Donato Pasquardi in 1630, is an alphabetical handbook of allegorical figures compiled for painters, sculptors, poets and emblem-makers. The 372 woodcuts each frame a single standing personification with her attributes — cornucopia and scattered coins, cut reeds, a swan, a star-crowned head, a building carried on the shoulder — and many sit beside ornamental vertical borders of masks, urns and foliage that can be lifted as separate strips.
