An Italian emblem book of 1588, printed in Rome by Bartolomeo Grassi with 263 plates engraved by Natale Bonifazio, presenting emblems and devices on the life and deeds of Pope Gregory XIII for learned and courtly readers. The small horizontal plates set winged dragons, altars, rotundas, shepherds and sunrises in deeply hatched landscapes inside patterned rectangular borders, useful for dragon motifs, vignette frames and compact allegorical scenes.
