An Italian emblem book of 1588, printed in Rome by Bartolomeo Grassi, in which Principio Fabricii built six books of devices and allegories around the dragon of Pope Gregory XIII's coat of arms as a model for the Christian prince, with plates engraved by Natale Bonifacio for learned court readers. The 268 small horizontal engravings set a dragon into every scene — harbours with galleons, walled hill towns, sea gods in choppy water, armoured men with pikes — each inside a ruled or patterned border, offering ready-made dragon and serpent figures, compact landscape stages, and frame patterns.
