Delle imprese trattato
Giulio Cesare Capaccio's treatise on imprese, printed at Naples in 1592 by Carlino and Pace, explaining emblematic devices and their mottoes for courtiers, heralds and writers. The woodcuts are decorated initials in which grotesque beasts, winged griffins, eagles, masks and acanthus scrollwork wrap around the letterform, giving designers a full alphabet of black-line ornamental capitals.
