Giorgio Vasari's biographies of Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reprinted in 1648 by the heirs of Evangelista Dozza in Bologna for readers and collectors of art history. The pictures here are letterpress woodcut initials, some set in strapwork or foliate frames, others built from figures, foliage and landscape hatching, worn enough to print with broken edges and visible paper tone.
