A Sienese treatise on imprese — personal devices and their proper construction — written by Scipione Bargagli and printed by Luca Bonetti in 1578 for gentlemen of the academies who devised and debated such emblems. The plates are small round line-engraved devices, each ringed by a Latin motto in capitals, holding a single object against sparse ground: a pyramid in water, a radiant sun, a plumb line, a set square, with fine hatched water and cloud; useful as ready-made roundels, mottoed borders and spare emblem symbols.
