An Italian treatise on imprese and heraldic devices compiled by Simon Biralli and printed in Venice by Giovanni Battista Ciotti in 1600, addressed to readers of emblem literature and designers of personal mottoes. The plates here are square woodcut initials — F, I and others — set in beds of curling acanthus, tulip-like blooms and berries, cut in coarse parallel hatching on a pale ground, usable as drop caps, spot ornaments or texture for borders.
