De l'utilité des voyages

Baudelot de Dairval, [Charles César], 1648-1722 · 1686 · Paris, P. Auboüin & P. Emery · 31 pictures

A two-volume antiquarian treatise of 1686 by Charles César Baudelot de Dairval, published in Paris by Auboüin and Emery, arguing the scholarly value of travel for the study of coins, gems, manuscripts and talismans, addressed to learned collectors. The engravings show obverse and reverse pairs linked by a short bar: profile heads, helmeted Minerva, seated deities with altars, a soldier with spear and shield, military standards, and Greek and Latin legends set in circular fields, useful as ready-made roundels, monogram frames and small emblem stamps.
