Tychonis Brahe Dani Epistolarvm astronomicarvm libri, quorum primvs hic illvstriss: et lavdatiss: principis Gvlielmi Hassiae landtgravii ac ipsius Mathematici literas, vnaq; Responsa ad singulas complectitur
Tycho Brahe's collected astronomical correspondence with Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse, printed in 1596 on Brahe's own press on the island of Hven for fellow astronomers and princely patrons. The plate shown is an engraved author portrait: a bearded figure in furred robe and chain leaning on a draped inscription tablet inside a round-arched niche, ringed by sixteen small ancestral coats of arms, offering designers an architectural portrait frame, a blank cartouche, and a grid of heraldic shields.
