Cours de peinture par principes
Roger de Piles's Cours de peinture par principes is a treatise on the principles of painting, published in Paris by Jacques Estienne in 1708 for painters, collectors and connoisseurs. The plates gathered here are the book's printed ornaments: small symmetrical headpieces and tailpieces of acanthus scrollwork, leafy sprays, urns, fleurs-de-lis and pendant drops, cut in heavy black line on toned laid paper, usable as rules, dividers and chapter heads.
