Gottfried Semper's two-volume theory of style in the technical and tectonic arts, issued in Munich by F. Bruckmann in 1884 as a handbook for craftsmen, artists and amateurs, covering textiles, ceramics, carpentry, metalwork and building. Line engravings trace ornament back to construction: palmette and anthemion panels, guilloche and wave mouldings, egg-and-dart, checkered wall painting, weave and knot diagrams.
