Hieroglyphica, sive, De sacris Aegyptiorvm literis commentarii
A Latin commentary on Egyptian hieroglyphs and symbolic imagery compiled by Pierio Valeriano and printed at Basel in 1556 by Michael Isengrin for humanist scholars and emblem readers. Small square woodcuts set single animals, herdsmen and mythological hybrids on hatched hills with distant towns, giving designers compact outline vignettes, animal profiles and simple landscape grounds usable as spot motifs.
