A popular character-reading manual by Holmes Whittier Merton, published in Philadelphia by David McKay in 1899, teaching phrenology, physiognomy and palmistry to lay readers and practitioners. The line drawings map labelled traits onto palms, fingers, thumbs and profile heads, giving designers ready-made diagram plates where anatomy is divided into named zones and hand-lettered along dividing lines.
