Descrizione di Pompeii
A topographical account of the excavated city of Pompeii by Giuseppe Fiorelli, director of the digs, printed in Naples in 1875 for archaeologists, epigraphers and educated visitors reading Latin inscriptions on site. The wood engravings are figureless street views built entirely from dense cross-hatching and stipple: polygonal lava paving, stepping stones, brick piers, truncated columns and a vaulted gate, useful as grey-toned texture, ruined-architecture silhouettes and one-point perspective backdrops.
