Cervoni, Giovanni, b. 1508 · 1588 · In Firenze : Appresso Giorgio Marescotti · 7 pictures

A festival account by Giovanni Cervoni, printed by Giorgio Marescotti in Florence in 1588, recording the triumphal arches, emblems, mottoes, fireworks and verses staged for Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici's entry into Pisa as Grand Duke of Tuscany. The woodcuts are typographic ornament rather than scenes: framed initials with grotesque figures and foliage, and headpieces built from scrolls and masks, useful as small-scale borders, drop caps and dividers.
