The deserted village
Oliver Goldsmith's 1770 pastoral poem reissued as an illustrated gift edition by the London chromolithographers Hildesheimer and Faulkner, with sepia plates signed by Fred Hines and lines of the verse lettered beneath. The drawings are soft tonal landscapes — thatched cottages behind garden steps, sedge-choked brooks, bare trees against banded cloud, cornstalks at dusk — useful for hazy monochrome backgrounds, vignette edges that fade into paper, and caption-and-image layouts.
