A 1740 Leipzig edition, printed by Johann Samuel Heinsius, of Johann Arndt's Vier (here five) Bücher vom wahren Christenthum, the Lutheran devotional classic of 1605-10, issued with three supplementary tracts for German Protestant household reading. The plates are small upright copperplate emblems, each a scene framed by an architectural niche or curtained opening above a stone pedestal carrying a German motto: landscapes with sun and clouds, allegorical figures joining hands, a heart on an altar.
