Designs for lace making
A privately printed English portfolio of lace designs compiled by S. H. Lilla Hailstone in 1870, issued in London by E. J. Francis for lacemakers and collectors studying needlepoint and bobbin patterns. The plates are photographic records of lace against dark grounds, so pale scrolling foliage, meshes and scalloped borders read as white-on-brown or white-on-black silhouettes; designers can lift openwork repeats, corner treatments and edging strips as ready-made overlays or masks.
