De symbolis heroicis, libri IX
A Latin treatise in nine books on heroic devices and imprese, written by the Jesuit Silvestro Pietrasanta and printed at Antwerp in 1634 by Balthasar Moretus at the Plantin press for scholars and noble patrons of emblem lore. Its 314 copper engravings set short Latin mottoes on ribbons inside scrolled strapwork cartouches above small seascapes, horizons, sundials, columns and rayed suns — a ready supply of frame shapes, banderoles and compact symbolic vignettes.
