De symbolis heroicis, libri IX
A Latin treatise on heroic devices and imprese by the Jesuit Silvestro Pietrasanta, printed in 1634 at the Plantin press of Balthasar Moretus in Antwerp for scholars, heralds and noble patrons interested in family emblems. Its 307 engravings are small oblong cartouches of strapwork, scrolls, volutes and masks framing a Latin motto on a ribbon above a minimal scene \u2014 sun, sea, ships, a bundle of arrows, a sprouting plant \u2014 useful as ready-made frames, banderoles and emblem vignettes.
