Details of decorative sculpture
A portfolio of photographic plates recording carved architectural ornament, issued in Boston by Bates in 1900 as a reference sheet-set for architects, modellers and decorative carvers. The halftones show Renaissance pilaster panels, carved wood door stiles and foliate friezes in raking light, giving symmetrical candelabra scrolls, acanthus rinceaux, urns and small beasts as line-ready motifs, with strong grain and shadow for texture work.
