Devises heroiques, et emblemes
An emblem book of heraldic devices first compiled by Claude Paradin and reissued with François d'Amboise's additions by J. Millot in Paris in 1614, made for courtiers and readers who collected mottoes and personal badges. The 173 small engravings isolate single emblems on blank or lightly hatched ground — a sword sprouting acanthus leaves, a cannon firing into flame and smoke, fringed standards and bannered spears — giving designers compact silhouetted motifs with clean outlines suited to marks, monograms and spot illustration.
