Devises heroiques, et emblemes

Paradin, Claude, 16th cent, Amboise, François d', 1550-1620 · 1614 · Paris, J. Millot · 172 pictures

A French emblem book of heroic devices, Claude Paradin's collection enlarged by François d'Amboise, printed in Paris by Jean Millot in 1614 for courtiers and readers of heraldry. The 173 small woodcuts set single objects against blank ground — a snake coiled through arrows, knotted cord holding a fish basket, an armored hand with sword, an anchor wrapped in ribbon — line-hatched silhouettes that lift cleanly for marks, seals and spot motifs.
