Devises heroïqves
Claude Paradin's emblem book of heraldic devices, printed in Lyon by Jean de Tournes and Guillaume Gazeau in 1557, with woodcuts attributed to Bernard Salomon, made for courtly readers who used mottoes and personal badges. The 180 small woodcuts isolate single motifs against blank ground — armored hands from clouds, swords, flames, banderoles, plants, beasts — usable as spot marks, logos, and scroll frames.
