Dialogo dell'imprese militari et amorose
Paolo Giovio's Italian dialogue on military and amorous imprese, expanded by Lodovico Domenichi and Gabriele Simeoni and printed in Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1574 for courtiers who devised personal badges. Its 145 woodcuts each set a device inside an oval frame, wrapped in ribbon scrolls lettered with Latin mottoes: burning tapers, crowned shields, pierced hearts, beasts and landscape strips useful as cartouches, badges and blank banderoles.
