Giovio, Paolo, 1483-1552, Simeoni, Gabriele, 1509-1575, Domenichi, Lodovico, 1515-1564, Rouillé, Guillaume, 1518?-1589, printer · 1574 · Lyone : Appresso Guglielmo Rouillio · 149 pictures

A dialogue on military and amatory imprese by Paolo Giovio, with additions by Lodovico Domenichi and Gabriele Simeoni, printed in Italian at Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1574 for courtiers and nobles cataloguing personal devices. The 150 woodcuts are oval-framed emblems, each pairing a single motif — a beacon, a crowned flame, a shield, a trident — with Latin mottoes lettered on curling banderoles above low hatched ground; useful for ribbon scrollwork, oval cartouche borders, and compact symbolic motifs.
