Diamonds, pearls and precious stones;
A 1913 gemstone handbook by Marcell Nelson Smith, printed in Boston by the Griffith-Stillings press for the jewelers Smith Patterson Company and aimed at retail buyers of diamonds and pearls. The plates are coarse-screen halftone photographs of mining work: a shirtless miner with a headlamp leaning into a shaft, prospectors posed among boulders, a terraced open cut beside trees, and men sorting gravel around barrels in a shed \u2014 useful for heavy-grain monochrome texture, silhouetted figures against black ground, and period labor scenes.
