An Italian emblem book of 1562, etched and published in Venice by the Vicentine painter Battista Pittoni, pairing engraved imprese of princes, dukes and men of letters with explanatory verse stanzas by Lodovico Dolce, made for courtly and learned readers. The plates surround each motto and verse with architectural strapwork frames carrying scrolls, grotesque masks, skulls, fruit swags and foliate corner pieces, supplying border and cartouche stock for page layouts, certificates and decorative typography.
